The Jebel Yis Expedition takes you across one of Fujairah’s most diverse and rewarding valleys, moving from the sedimentary shaded waterways of Wadi Sidr and Wadi Ar Ar to the fertile oasis of Maydaq. Combining tranquil streams, rugged ophiolite canyon walls, and ancient cultural remnants, this trek demands endurance and courage. Expect steep exposures, constant inclines, and technical footing—perfect for those who want a challenging yet scenic expedition in the Hajar mountains.
The route begins in Wadi Sidr/Ar Ar, where the soft trickle of streams and shaded pockets of greenery contrast dramatically against looming canyon walls. Along the way, you’ll encounter small pools of water, hardy garra fish darting beneath the surface, and local wildlife adapted to these desert waterways.
The path ascends gradually, with long stretches of scrambling up limestone shelves and traversing narrow ridges. Ancient terrace farms, remnants of small settlements, and palm groves hint at the history of life sustained in this valley.
The final section descends into Maydaq, a fertile and historically significant oasis. Guarded by Maydaq Fort and smaller watchtowers, the area is dotted with mango, lemon, and orange groves. Here, hikers can also encounter rare flora and archaeological features, including mosques built from gravel and palm fronds. The wide-open skies of the wadi plain provide a dramatic backdrop for your final steps into Maydaq.
