Trail Description
The Sal Expedition begins in Wadi Bih, one of the most iconic valleys of the Hajar Mountains, and ascends through historic donkey paths and terraced landscapes. The route combines cultural immersion with physically demanding terrain, progressing toward Hebs Village with significant climbs and exploration of abandoned settlements along the way.
The trail starts with a steady climb up donkey paths, transitioning into steeper scrambles and exposed sections that test balance and endurance. Hikers pass by the abandoned villages of Ghabas and Shamal, where remnants of stone houses, terrace farms, and mountain irrigation systems provide a window into the region’s past. The path skirts close to the famous Hanging Gardens Trail, offering dramatic views of limestone cliffs and hidden greenery before veering onto a more direct ascent toward Hebs.
Higher up, the climb steepens further, requiring scrambling through narrow passages and negotiating rocky shelves. Along the way, hikers may encounter terrace fields, traditional ovens, and farm remnants, evidence of once-thriving highland communities. The geology shifts to darker limestone with fossil-rich surfaces and quartz crystal outcrops, adding to the sense of discovery.
At the summit, the route arrives at Hebs Village, a historic settlement once home to the Hebsi tribe. The village, perched high in the mountains, is surrounded by stunning views of Ras Al Khaimah’s rugged ridgelines and distant Musandam. Descending from Hebs, the trail reconnects to Wadi Bih via steep scrambles and scree slopes, closing a demanding but spectacular segment of the Trans Emirates Trail.
