The Yanas Expedition connects Tafif to Naqab via the rugged Tabara route, another physcially demanding canyon section of the Trans Emirates Trail (TET). This segment takes trekkers deep into the Wadi Naqab catchment area, beneath the imposing limestone cliffs of Jebel Yanas, where steep descents, boulder scrambles, and exposed drops dominate the terrain.
The route begins with a steep, narrow descent from the Tafif side, immediately plunging into a canyon system filled with loose scree and sharp limestone ledges. The trail demands constant three-point contact as hikers navigate zig-zagging goat tracks, jagged boulder gardens, and shifting gravel slopes. After an hour of this technical descent, the path funnels into a series of sheer limestone drops that require short technical climbs—navigable without ropes, but demanding focus, flexibility, and experience.
As the canyon narrows, you’ll pass remnants of terraced fields and abandoned stone shelters carved into ledges, silent witnesses of a once-inhabited highland settlement. These ruins overlook the plunging valley, offering both rest stops and extraordinary views of the Naqab basin.
Past the mid-point of Yanas Expedition trail, the Tabara route rises into a wider shelf system where hikers gain elevation toward the upper ridge. Here, the darker strata of Jebel Yanas become visible, streaked with quartz veins and fossil-rich limestone formations. From this vantage point, sweeping views extend over Wadi Naqab, with its hidden villages and high escarpments.
The final section is an arduous scramble across exposed scree slopes before merging with the upper tracks leading into Naqab. Every step demands attention—shifting rocks, steep grades, and sudden drops make this one of the most technically challenging single-day expeditions on the TET.
