Located at the crux of where the Hajar Mountains meet the Emirates and Oman, the buzzing town of Hatta holds an abundance of offerings: scenic trails overlooking the main town, the Hatta dam, neighbouring village of Masfout and rugged, rolling mountains in the direction of Oman. An exclave of Dubai and once a part of Oman, Hatta is nestled at a higher altitude and generally has a cooler climate than Dubai, making it an enjoyable hiking destination.
There are a number of interconnected hiking trails which start from the Hatta Wadi Hub visitor centre and are classified as Green, Blue, Red and Black trails in terms of difficulty.
Green Trail: This is the easier hike (though still challenging) with flat and wide trails to start, most suitable for families or beginners. One can hike up to the famous Hollywood-style “Hatta” signage overlooking Hatta dam and adjoining farms. An easier trail is one that winds its way up gently from the front with a full view of the “Hatta” signage. Hikers can retrace the same trail to make their way back to Wadi Hub for a leisurely walk. Those looking for more time out under the sun can make their way down from behind the signage, navigating through relatively steeper gradients with loose sand and rocks.
Black Trail: An intense, challenging trek that takes you to the summit of 600m peaks, exposed ridges and offers panoramic, 360 degree views of the Hajar Mountain range. The black trails are physically demanding and perfect for the more adventurous hikers. Trail conditions are marked by long, continuous, steep ascents & descents, narrow rocky sections and loose rocks. The landscapes change dramatically as one traverses the mountain range – the mountains displaying a range of colours and impressive geological formations around every bend. Making your way up curved, stony staircases and under large, overhanging boulders make it a thrilling and rewarding experience.
What else is there to do in Hatta: Restaurants and cafes, a small water park and adventure activities such as a zip-line, obstacle course and rock climbing wall at the Hatta Wadi Hub provide a good way to unwind and spend the day here after a hike. Hikers can also make a quick visit to the Masfout Castle and Al Manama Museum / Al Mareer Fort a short drive away in Masfout to know more about the history of this region.
