REC L2 Outdoor First Aid
A two day course (16 hours). The outdoor First Aid course is designed to introduce a systematic way of first aid for managing casualties. Topic learning and practicals intermixed with scenarios of real situations.
Course Content:
- Emergency: vital signs, emergency action, airway, unconscious, choking, bleeding, breathing and circulation, AED (automated external defibrillator) practical training
- Environment: heat stress, cold stress, hot injuries, cold injuries, dehydration
- Illness: chest pain, stroke, asthma, epilepsy, diabetes, sepsis, angina
- Injury: head, spine, chest, abdomen, pelvis, bones, soft tissue, eye
- Rescue: transportation, communication, medevac
To accommodate the RYA syllabus this Outdoor First Aid course will include understanding the differential for drowning, immersion and seasickness.
The Qualification: The Outdoor First Aid course is certified for three years and is an entry point for the REC scheme. It is the approved course for RYA, BCU, MLTB.

Profile
Alan holds the UK Mountain Training’s awards: Summer, Winter and International Mountain Leader and as a Training Provider for Mountain Training has delivered 50 Mountain training courses in the UK. Alan is also an approved UIAA Training Provider for the Mountain Skills: Safety and Good practice course which has previously been delivered by him to Indonesian mountain guides.
Additionally, Alan is a Senior Trainer with Rescue Emergency Care (REC) delivering quality outdoor First Aid courses for over 25 years. Currently he delivers the advanced Travel & Expedition First Aid and High Altitude First Aid courses and workshops. Clients for this training include some eminent names and organizations in the outdoor sector as well as military groups in the UK.
Alan is an approved RGS Training Provider for the Off-Site Safety Management course.
For many years, Alan has led treks and expeditions to global long-haul destinations including 20 trips to the Himalayas.
Alan is a qualified and experienced ISO Lead Auditor for ISO 9001/14001/45001 and can assess compliance for BS8848:2014 which is the British Standard for adventure travel outside of the UK.
